Age & Weight Regulations for Car Seats in Ohio

Car seats are required for transport of children in vehicles in Ohio. Different types of restraints are used for different age groups. The state has age and weight guidelines to ensure proper use of each type of car seat.

  1. Rear-Facing Car Seats

    • Infants must be in car seats that are rear-facing. Infants under the age of one year or less than 20 pounds must be in these seats.

    Front-Facing Car Seats

    • Children older than one year or more than 20 pounds can ride in a front-facing car seat. Children must be in car seats until they are at least four years old and weigh at least 40 pounds.

    Booster Seats

    • Children under the age of eight who weigh less than 40 pounds must still be restrained. They can ride in either a car seat or a booster seat.

    Other Restraints

    • All children under the age of 15 must be restrained in some manner, regardless of where they sit in the vehicle.
