Passing a School Bus With Amber Lights
In order to keep children on a school bus safe, there are certain rules and regulations that you must follow when you are driving. Buses have different-colored lights and signals that will notify other drivers when it is safe to pass the bus. If you do not follow these signals, it could pose a danger for anyone getting off the bus, and it can also result in a traffic ticket for disregarding the signals coming from the school bus.
Instructions
Be cautious when approaching a stopped or stopping school bus. If you see yellow hazard warning lights flashing, you may proceed past the school bus with caution. Stop your vehicle at least 100 feet behind a school bus when the bus driver flashes his amber warning lights. You may pass the bus if you are already past the 100-feet mark or as the bus is stopping and pulling over. Again, do this with caution; there may be passengers waiting to board the bus. If you are in an area where the speed limit is higher than 35 miles per hour, the bus driver will flash his warning lights 300 feet away. Stop your vehicle if the bus driver turns on the red lights of the school bus or extends the "STOP" arm. Stop at least 20 feet from the bus, and remain stopped until the arm retracts or the red lights are turned off.
