How to Build an Edible Car that Rolls
Kids love eating foods shaped like animals or letters. They especially enjoy eating foods that are created to look like familiar objects, such as gingerbread houses or cookie cars. Build an edible, rolling car for an extra special surprise at mealtime for children or for party treats and supply a healthy treat at the same time. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce heart disease, risk of stroke, cancer, digestive issues and eye problems and can result in lower blood pressure. You should eat 4 1/2 cups of fruits and vegetables daily. Use apples, bananas and blueberries to make a healthy, rolling car snack.
Things You'll Need
- 3 apples
- 4 blueberries
- Banana
- Knife
- Cutting board
- Metal biscuit cutter straight edge, 1 1/2 inches diameter
- Toothpicks
- Whipped cream (optional)
Instructions
Hold an apple with the stem up, and cut it vertically into 1/2-inch thick slices on a cutting board. Cut each side of the core. You want nice, flat slices. Lay the slices flat on the cutting board. You need enough slices to cut out four circles with a biscuit cutter. Position a straight-edged, metal biscuit cutter over an apple slice. Push down on the handle of the biscuit cutter on top of the apple slice, evenly and firmly, cutting out a circle. Biscuit cutters come with straight or fluted edges. You need the straight edge because these apple circles are the wheels of the car. Cut out four wheels/circles. Biscuit cutters can be purchased at kitchen or cooking stores. Cut an apple in half vertically (stem up). Cut one of the halves in half vertically forming a wedge with two flat sides that are 1-inch thick. Leave the skin on the top of the wedge. Peel a banana. Discard peel. Stick a toothpick in the bottom center of the apple wedge, pushing it up into the wedge about half way. Center the wedge over the middle of the banana and stick the other half of the toothpick into the banana. Insert a toothpick into each apple wheel, so 1/4- to 1/2-inch of the toothpick sticks out of the left side of two wheels and the right side of two wheels. To avoid squishing the banana, you want to insert the toothpick into the apple wheels first. Poke the toothpicks with the apple wheels attached into the sides of the banana where wheels are normally positioned on a car (two on each side, about 3 to 4 inches apart). Push a blueberry onto each of the 1/4- to 1/2-inch sections of the toothpicks protruding from the outside of the apple wheels. Use whipped cream to decorate the banana car further if desired. Push the banana car gently on a flat surface such as a table or plate to roll the edible car. Previous:Food for Kids With Braces
