Child Behavior Problems in School

Child behavior problems in school are a challenge for both teachers and parents. Most often such issues are blamed on a failing of the parents or child; however, the behaviors often stem from a child's frustrations with something in the school situation.

  1. Common Types of Misbehavior

    • Watch for common types of misbehavior such as refusal to cooperate, lying and other manipulative behavior, fighting and bullying, disrespect and back talk, and poor work performance and missing assignments. These behaviors are often signs of underlying problems.

    Five Main Causes

    • Parents fail to provide the type of support system needed for student success, such as homework assistance, regular bed times and the teaching of self-discipline. Children struggle with physical or psychological issues that contribute to learning challenges and bring frustration. Students are misplaced in the curriculum (they may need more help or more of a challenge) or teaching routines may lack what individual students need. Teachers may lack proper teaching techniques and discipline management. School administrations do not practice successful school management routines.

    Possible Solutions

    • As parents, be a consistent force of discipline and love in a child's life. Act as an advocate for the child. Provide a safe, and supportive home learning environment. As teachers, provide fair treatment and consistency for equality and stability. Honest observations in reports to parents and administration about a student's abilities and behaviors can provide crucial clues to causes, and gain the attention of needed specialists and educators. Try new approaches and techniques to benefit all types of learners.
