Parenting Classes for Children With Behavior Problems
As a parent, you know parenting is a tough enough job on its own. When you add behavior problems to the mix, the task is even more challenging and stressful. Your children don̵7;t come with an owner̵7;s manual and your own natural parental instincts may not be enough to combat tougher behavior issues. Parenting classes taught by qualified professionals specializing in problem behaviors can help give you new ideas and the skills necessary to cope with your child's difficult behavior.

Purpose
-
Parenting classes are designed to help parents learn effective methods for managing child behavior and discipline. Basic parenting classes focus on the essential needs of all children while classes specific to children with behavior problems focus on determining the causes of behavior, de-escalating the behavior, preventing problems, coping skills and effective discipline techniques. While not every method taught in the class will prove effective with all children and all behaviors, the purpose is to give parents new ways to approach problem behaviors and help them understand their child̵7;s behaviors. Parenting classes also help provide emotional support through group sessions and support groups.
Group Classes
-
Group parenting classes allow parents to connect with other parents who are going through the same issues. They often take place weekly for six to eight weeks in a small group setting in the community. Many parents feel they are the only ones struggling with behavior issues and group classes can help ease those feelings. Additionally, parents are often able to support each other by sharing stories, tips and techniques. Many communities offer free parenting classes through mental health organizations, churches, hospitals and other child development organizations. Your child̵7;s pediatrician or school counselor is likely to have additional resources as well.
Online Workshops
-
Online parenting workshops offered by The Center for Parenting Education, allow parents with busy schedules or who are not able to access local classes the opportunity to participate in parenting classes virtually online. Some online classes are free, while others charge for the workshop. Before taking an online parenting course, be sure to check the credentials of the teacher or leader of the workshop. Many reputable organizations offer online classes but be aware of misinformation on the internet as well.
In-Home
-
In-home parenting classes are generally reserved for children with severe behavior issues that pose a threat to the safety of the child or others in the household. In-home services, often referred to as wraparound services, provide intense in-home treatment for children and parents while working with a psychologist, a therapist and case aids. In-home services allow the therapist to observe parent-child interactions in a familiar environment and make suggestions based on the family̵7;s specific needs. Case aids are sometimes utilized to help in observation and offer additional support. Quite often, this is a last resort alternative to hospitalization or out-of-home placement.
