Facts About Human Growth & Development

Human growth and development is a very long and involved topic, well beyond the scope of one article. Items to consider are how fast we grow over our childhood, how we mature during puberty, how our minds grow, how we interact with others and how we learn to control our bodies.

  1. Height

    • Boys and girls have different growth spurts throughout their life. From the age of 0 to 2, both boys and girls grow an average of 13 to 15 inches. From age 2 to 5, both sexes grow between 8 and 10 inches. From age 5 to 12, boys grow 13 to 18 inches and girls grow 15 to 18 inches. From age 12 to 20, boys grow 10 inches, and girls grow 4 to 5 inches.

    Body Hair

    • Although both genders are born with very light body hair, it isn̵7;t until puberty that it begins to darken under the arms, around the genitals, on the chest and on the face. Girls begin puberty between the ages of 8 and 13, and boys begin later, as early as 9 and as late as 14.

    Intellectual Growth

    • At six months old, babies find their feet fascinating, and can understand the difference between up and down. By the age of two years, children can string words together and refer to themselves by their own name.

    Social Growth

    • Social milestones also help show the development of the child, as by the age of five years old, the child can pick and choose their own friends. Teens, however, focus on their identities within social groups, as to how they are different and unique from others within the group.

    Motor Growth

    • From birth to the age of two years, babies develop slowly by moving arms and legs, controlling finger movement, and focusing their eyes. They gradually move toward sitting upright, then crawling, then standing, then walking, then running.

    • An average child, born with the ability to learn language, is quite a competent language user by age 6. That children acquire language so rapidly and with seemingly little effort is really quite miraculous. Although much is still unknown about how la
