How to Teach Preschool Children About Clouds

Preschool children are naturally curious about the world around them. With minimal planning, you can teach your preschoolers about stratus, cirrus and cumulus clouds through fun and creative activities. The study may include crafts, games, books, or simply lying on the grass and observing clouds. It all depends how in-depth you want to go and how interested your students are.

Things You'll Need

  • Library book on clouds
  • Construction paper
  • Marker
  • Cotton balls
  • Glue

Instructions

    • 1

Take a trip to the local library and find a cloud book for the preschool level, such as "It Looked Like Spilt Milk" by Charles G. Shaw or "The Cloud Book" by Tomie de Paola.

    • 2

Create a cloud chart on construction paper that consists of three columns. Entitle the chart "Our Favorite Clouds." Label the columns "Stratus," "Cirrus" and "Cumulus."

    • 3

Begin the lesson by reading the library book to the children. Ask a few questions about the story, such as "What type of clouds did we read about?" and "What are the shapes of the different clouds?"

    • 4

Have each child take a cotton ball and shape, cut or stretch it into his favorite cloud shape. Glue each "cloud" under the appropriate column.

    • 5

Use the data in the chart and ask the children some additional questions that will enhance their math skills. For example, you could ask "What cloud type is liked by the most students?" and "How many students liked cirrus clouds?"
