How to Make Homemade Playdough

If you̵7;re looking for a quiet activity that keeps kids engaged, play dough might be the perfect choice. Sure, you can buy it, but save yourself some valuable green "dough" and make your own. You probably already have the ingredients you need right in your pantry. Some recipes involve cooking the dough and others don̵7;t. Of course, a no-cook recipe is easiest, but the dough won't last as long as one that is cooked.

Things You'll Need

  • Bowl
  • Flour
  • Cream of tartar
  • Salt
  • Vegetable oil
  • Stirring spoon
  • Food coloring
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Sealable bag or container

Instructions

  1. Traditional Cooked Play Dough Recipe

    • 1

Stir together 1 cup of flour, 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar and 1/2 cup of salt.

    • 2

Mix 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and 1 cup of water. Use as many drops of food coloring as it takes to get the desired color.

    • 3

Add the dry ingredients slowly to the wet ingredients, stirring the two until the mixture is smooth.

    • 4

Microwave the mixture for three to four minutes. Take it out in 30-second intervals to stir and remove all the clumps. Alternatively, cook the mixture on medium heat until it is thick and rubbery.

    • 5

Allow the dough to cool. Then knead it for one minute until the dough is soft. You can add glitter at this time, if desired.

    • 6

Store the dough in an airtight sealable bag or container that is stored at room temperature.
