DIY: Vampire Fangs

If you are in the market for vampire fangs, you can buy fake fangs at most costume shops. Some people find these fangs uncomfortable though, since they are made in a very general shape and size that doesn't necessarily fit the wearer. Wearing fake fangs doesn't mean that you have to spend your night in discomfort. You can make your own fangs with a few basic materials. If done right, these fangs are so realistic, they also work well for filmmaking or stage productions.

  1. Make a Mold

    • The first step in making fake fangs is to make a mold of your teeth. You can use alginate, which is available at crafts stores and some costume stores around Halloween. Look for an alginate labeled food grade, since you will be putting it in your mouth. There are some dental grade alginates, like Hollywood Impressions, which are silicone free and made specifically for molding teeth. There will be directions for mixing the alginate on the package. You will need a mixer or a drill with a mixing tool to thoroughly mix the alginate. Once mixed, spread a thick layer of alginate on a Styrofoam cup with one side cut out. Hold the cup up to your mouth and bite down so that your upper teeth sink into the alginate fully. It will take about three minutes to set up.

Make a Copy of Your Teeth

    • Once you have created your mold, you will make an exact duplicate of your teeth with polyester resin. Polyester resin and the resin catalyst can be purchased at most craft stores. Mix the two according to the directions on the bottles, creating about six ounces of liquid total. Stir just enough to combine and pour into the mold immediately. Wait for the liquid to dry, about five minutes, then peel off the cup and the mold.

    Form Fangs

    • You can create each fang with clear nail acrylic. Place the acrylic powder in a small dish, add just enough liquid to thoroughly wet the power and mix continuously until it holds a ball shape. Place the ball of acrylic on the canine, the third tooth back on each side of your model teeth, pushing it all the way down to the base. In five minutes or so, the acrylic will get very hot before turning solid. Once solid, remove it from the resin teeth and use a dremel to shape. File away the extra tooth impressions on each side, but leave the ridges on either side of the canine. This will help the finished product stick to your tooth. There will also be a ridge from the indentation in your gum line. File down to just inside this ridge to make it look as if your tooth is coming right out of your gums. Once your tooth is completely filed, you should be able to slide it directly onto your tooth and it should stay in place without any additional adhesive.
