Established in 1967 by an act of the Los Angeles Board of Education, the college opened that fall with 22 full-time faculty members and 600 students. Since then, enrollment has grown to more than 6,000 students.

LASC is adjacent to Inglewood and Watts, and many of its students come to the college from those and other nearby communities. The academic mission of the college is to prepare students academically, so they can transfer into programs at four-year colleges, enter technical schools, and/or pursue continuing education throughout their lives and careers.
In addition to academic endeavors, the college leaders have worked to develop LASC into a resource for the community. This includes partnerships with agencies in the communities and with local schools.
