Hidden Picture Activities

Hidden picture activities come in several different formats. Children can find a list of objects that they have to look for in one huge picture or they can figure out a pattern that brings out a hidden picture. Both of these activities actively engage a child individually or with a group. Hidden picture activities exercise a child's brain as they try to find the pictures.

  1. Printed Hidden Pictures

    • Hidden pictures appeal to children of all ages.

"Highlights for Children" is a popular magazine that has entertained children for nearly a century. One of its most popular features is the Hidden Pictures page, which is also available online at no cost. In this activity, children are shown a list of items that they should try to find in one large picture. Sometimes the items are upside down and sometimes they are part of another item. Since there are no words or letters to find, children as young as 2 or 3 years old can enjoy finding these pictures. Since some of the pictures are so difficult to find, the activity also entertains children who are much older.

    Color by Numbers Activity

    • Practice numbers and find a hidden picture.

Children can practice recognizing their numbers in this special hidden picture activity. Parents and teachers can print out special pages that show a grid or shapes with numbers written in. A key on the page shows children what color they should color each number. As they fill in all the shapes that are parts of the grid, a picture emerges. Websites such as PrintActivities.com offer free downloads for different color-by-number hidden picture activities.

    Make a Puzzle Activity

    • Create your own hidden puzzle picture for your friends to use.

Bring out the artist in your child by encouraging him to make his own hidden picture activity for other children to use. She can do this by choosing five to 10 objects that she would like to draw. Tell him to draw small versions of these images to use as a key. Suggest that she think about where she might want to put these items within a large picture, and remind her that some of the items should be tricky to make it challenging for other children. After the child completes the picture and the key, you might want to photocopy the page so he can share it with friends and keep a copy for himself.
