Projects for Kids to Make for a Farmers Market
The farmers market is an ideal place to go if you want to stock up on fresh and local produce. It's also an easy way to sell your produce if you run a farm or large gardening co-op. If your kids want in on the action, crafts are an enjoyable way for them to earn a little bit of money and spend the day with you at the market.

Edible Projects
-
Most people go to the farmers market for food, so edible projects are an enjoyable way for your kids to net some cash while learning in the kitchen. Have your kids harvest tomatoes, onions and jalapenos from your garden and make salsa. Put it into sterilized canning jars and tie a label around the lid with a pretty ribbon. If you have a farm and grow potatoes, slice them thinly, deep fry, season with salt and sell homemade potato chips in small bags. Or, simply go to the grocery store and stock up on ingredients to make homemade blueberry muffins, banana bread or chocolate chip cookies. Pair them with bottled water or lemonade and your kids are sure to sell out.
Skin Products

Whipping up your own batch of lotion or soap is surprisingly easy, and is appealing to kids too. For example, a simple exfoliating scrub comes together with equal parts white table sugar and olive oil, with a drop or two of essential oil for fragrance. Help your child mix up scented hand lotion or mold cakes of soap. Bottle liquid versions and wrap bar soaps in plastic wrap. Add an eye-catching label -- with bright colors and fancy lettering -- to the products and set up shop at the local farmers market.
Jewelry
-
Even though the farmers market is predominately food, some vendors sell home items too. If your child is older and experienced with intricate projects that take dedication and time, she might be interested in making jewelry to sell. A tutorial class at your local craft store gives her the technique, and a small investment in beads, wire and clasps sets her up for business. Your child can make bracelets and necklaces, package them on small pieces of cardboard or plastic and mark each with a price.
Home Items
-
In keeping with the homemade or home-grown theme, creating home decor items is a new and different idea for the market. Your child can decoupage simple wooden frames with fancy scrapbook paper and modge podge. This technique also works for clear glass candle holders. Your child can use oven-safe paint to decorate white coffee mugs or dinner plates. Cutting small squares of fabric with pinking shears and selling them as reusable napkins is another easy idea. Decorated photo boxes or albums are other ideas.
