Poems About Grandmas From Grandkids
Although a quick Internet search will yield countless poems that a child can copy down and give to his grandma, nothing beats an original piece of creative writing. Helping your child to compose a one-of-a-kind poem from scratch isn̵7;t as hard as it might seem. All you need to provide is a little structure, inspiration and encouragement for children to express unique and loving sentiments in an original poem that celebrates grandma.

Rhyming Poems
-
Rhyming poems are the most popular, but also difficult, kind of poetry. Encourage your child to follow a simple ABAB end rhyme pattern in a short-and-sweet, four-line original poem. Provide him with keywords that are easy to end sentences with and rhyme with other words to help him get inspired. Words like ̶0;you,̶1; ̶0;me,̶1; and ̶0;glad̶1; are simple enough for older kids to rhyme. Help younger children add a few original lines to a short, well-known poem such as ̶0;Roses are Red.̶1; Recite the first two lines of the poem -- ̶0;Roses are red, violets are blue̶1; -- and encourage him to add the next line (maybe, ̶0;I love my grandma̶1;). Offer him rhyme possibilities for the final line, and compose it together.
Shape Poems
-
Shape poems make a great homemade craft gift for grandma, because they combine the art of picture with language. A shape poem is written out onto the paper in a way that resembles a shape or icon, usually what the poem is about. It can rhyme but doesn̵7;t have to. Encourage your child to write a few lines of poetry comparing grandma̵7;s love to a tall, strong tree. Once the first draft is finished, trace a tree shape with a stencil onto lined paper, and have your child fill it in with the lines of poetry. Cut it out and glue it to a piece of construction paper for your child to decorate. The same can be done with a heart, star or teddy bear shape.
Haiku Poems
-
Haiku is a useful poetic form for children because the emphasis is on syllables, not rhyme scheme. Promote counting and creative skills at once by encouraging your child to write a haiku for grandma. To compose a three-line haiku, write a first line with five syllables, a seven-syllable second line and another five-syllable line to end the poem. For example, ̶0;I love my grandma. She is always nice to me, and gives me great hugs.̶1;
Tanka Poems
-
Older children might enjoy writing tanka poems, which are similar to haiku poems but contain more lines and syllables. The first three lines follow the five-seven-five haiku syllable pattern, but tanka poems include two additional seven-syllable lines at the end. Challenge kids to include a typical aspect of tanka poetry, such as a comparison that utilizes simile or metaphor, or incorporate a rhyme scheme such as ABABCC.
