How to Make a Ring Toss Game

Whether you̵7;re helping out with your child̵7;s school carnival or getting ready for a backyard birthday party, you can create a ring toss game at home for an inexpensive addition to the celebration̵7;s game list. This quintessential carnival game lets you show off your recycling savvy side and you can coordinate the game with the color scheme of the party or event to instantly add to the party̵7;s decor, too.

Things You'll Need

  • 12 clear, glass bottles
  • Acrylic paint
  • Newspaper
  • Fruit crate
  • Cardboard box
  • Wood glue
  • Embroidery hoops
  • Yarn
  • Hot glue gun with glue sticks (optional)
  • 1/2-inch plywood
  • Wood primer and paint
  • Drill
  • Straight coat hook pegs
  • Wooden dowels (optional)
  • Rope
  • Colored electrical tape

Instructions

  1. Bottle Ring Toss Game

    • 1

Remove the labels from 12 clear, glass bottles, and then wash and dry each one.

    • 2

Pour approximately 1 tbsp. of acrylic paint into each bottle -- use a different color in each bottle or use just two or three colors to coordinate with a theme. Cover the top of each bottle, and then shake and roll them to distribute the paint evenly inside. Turn the bottles upside down onto newspaper and allow the excess paint to drain from the bottles. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

    • 3

Place the fruit crate on your work surface. Paint the entire box in the color of your choice and allow it to dry according to the paint manufacturer̵7;s instructions.

    • 4

Place all of the bottles into the fruit crate. If you don't have a fruit crate, you can place the bottles into a sturdy cardboard box or construct a simple box from plywood. Just cut the bottom of the box and 4 sides, each about 6 inches tall, and then glue the pieces together with wood glue.

    • 5

Separate the two pieces of a 3-inch embroidery hoop by loosening the screw. Set aside the outer ring to use in another project. Tie the end of a piece of yarn to the inner embroidery ring and wrap it around the ring to completely cover the plastic. You can use a dab of hot glue to hold the yarn's end in place. Continue wrapping to cover the embroidery hoop 2 to 3 times. Repeat to make additional rings for the game. Use different colored yarn to separate the rings by team.

    • 6

Place the bottle-filled crate on a flat surface. Make a mark on the ground at least a few feet away from the crate, or put a place marker on the ground. Have the kids stand behind the line and take turns tossing 3 of the embroidery hoop rings at the crate to try to get them over any of the bottles. The child to get the most rings on the bottles wins the game.

    Quick Coat Hook Ring Toss

    • 7

Cut a piece of 1/2-inch plywood to any size you'd like for the game. Use a board about 18 inches by 24 inches in size for a medium-size ring toss board. Prime and paint the board any color you like and allow it to dry thoroughly.

    • 8

Make pencil dots on the back of the board to mark places for the pegs.

    • 9

Drill through each hole and insert a straight coat hook peg through each one. Secure the pegs to the board with the screw that came with each peg. Alternatively, use wood glue to secure short, wooden dowels to the board.

    • 10

Make the rings from rope. Cut a 10-inch piece of rope and hold the ends together. Wrap the ends with colored electrical tape to secure. Cut another 10-inch piece of rope for each additional ring and secure each one with different colored electrical tape.

    • 11

Place the coat hook peg board on a flat surface. Take three to four large steps backwards and draw a line or lay a place marker. Have the kids stand behind the line and take turns tossing the rope rings at the pegs. Give each child 3 rings at a time and the child who gets the most rings on the pegs wins the game.
