How to Take a Baby Outside When It's Cold
Many new parents will get into a situation where they have no choice but to take their baby outside in the cold. When this scenario presents itself, you can be prepared by knowing how to properly dress your baby and protect her from blasts of freezing wind or snow. Keeping your baby warm will allow her to stay comfortable and you will avoid exposing her to the shocks of a temperature drop.
Instructions
Check the temperature. Look outside and see what the weather conditions are -- whether it is raining, snowing, windy or just plain cold. This will give you a sense of how warmly to dress your baby. Dress your baby in a onesie. Consider this her undergarment that goes over her diaper. It is a good starting base for adding more layers. Put stretchy pants on your baby's legs and a long-sleeved shirt over her head. All of her skin should be covered at this point except her hands, head and feet. Add a second layer of stretchy pants and a long-sleeved shirt if the fabrics are thin. You want your baby to be properly insulated in her clothes. Find a thick sweater from your baby's closet to put on her. If you are still questioning whether her legs will be cold with only two layers of stretchy pants, put a pair of jeans on her, or pants made of fleece, over the other layers. Cover your baby's head with a beanie that comes over her ears. Add socks to her feet, and shoes. If you have baby mittens for her hands, cover those, too. Place your baby in her carriage or stroller. Pull down the hood as far as it will go so that the carriage or stroller provides protection in case of winds or precipitation. If you would rather carry your baby directly to the car, transport her from the house in a blanket that is wrapped around her. Make sure her eyes are protected so that they do not sting from the cold.
