How to Get Your 2-month-old to Sleep Better

If you're the parent of a 2-month-old baby, you're probably eager to have her sleep through the night so that you can get a good rest yourself. Some people advocate letting baby "cry it out," checking on her at intervals until she falls asleep. If this seems a little harsh for a baby so young, there are other strategies you can employ. Experiment until you find what works for you--and baby.

Things You'll Need

  • Dark curtains
  • White-noise machine

Encourage your baby to stay awake at certain times. Assuming that you want your baby to sleep more during the night, make sure that she doesn't get too much sleep during the day. A 2-month-old baby should be taking two or three naps a day. Avoid putting her down for a nap in the late afternoon or early evening so that she'll be sleepy at nighttime. Don't let a nap go longer than two hours.

Hang dark curtains in her bedroom for naps. Your baby should learn that dark time is for sleeping.

Recognize the signs that she's sleepy. If you wait too long for your baby to sleep, she will become overtired and will not sleep. While each child has different signs of sleepiness, look for eye rubbing or ear pulling. When you see the signs, start to put her to sleep.

Feed her right before she sleeps and you sleep. Two-month-old babies wake at night for feedings. To help her sleep better, feed her immediately before she sleeps, and then wake her for a feeding just before you go to sleep. Doing this will ensure that she doesn't wake you up one hour after you've gone to bed.

Use a white-noise machine to drown out any noises. Some babies have a hard time sleeping when there are other noises in the house. A white-noise machine helps baby block out the noises so that she can sleep.
