Instructions for Making a Fitted Bassinet Sheet

A bassinet is a type of baby furniture for a newborn that is smaller than the traditional baby crib. The bassinet is usually equipped with a small mattress to make baby comfortable and cozy. Mattresses differ depending on the specific bassinet, but most of the mattresses are rectangular in shape. It is possible to make your own fitted sheets to cover the mattresses and keep a baby warm and comfortable through the night.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Sewing pins
  • Thread
  • Elastic
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the bassinet mattress. Get the height, width and length measurements. Use these measurements to calculate the necessary fabric. The formula for the width of the fabric is the width + (the height x 3) + 0.5 inches. The length measurement for fabric is the length + (the height x 3) + 0.5 inches.

    • 2

Fold the fabric in half along the width and then again along the length. Cut out a square that is the height measurement multiplied by 1.5 from the unfolded corners of the fabric. Unfold the fabric.

    • 3

Put the right sides of the corners together. Sew a straight seam at ¼ of an inch using the sewing machine. Set the machine to a zigzag stitch and repeat over the same area as the straight seam.

    • 4

Fold the edges around the entire sheet down about ¼ inch. Pin it together and then sew the seam for the edges of the sheet.

    • 5

Line the elastic up with the corners. Start at the middle and line it up along the entire corner. Zigzag stitch the elastic onto the fabric. Stretch the elastic while sewing to get the best effect. Repeat for all of the corners.
