How to Clean a Nasal Aspirator
Nasal aspirators help relieve congestion and keep your baby's airway clear by suctioning away mucus. Nasal aspirators collect the mucus inside the instrument, so they do need to be cleaned after each use to prevent bacteria from accumulating. In addition to cleaning your nasal aspirator, you may also want to periodically sterilize it. Cleaning and sterilizing your nasal aspirator after each use will ensure you are not spreading infection and it will keep it in working order so you don't have to replace it.
Things You'll Need
- Large bowl
- Antibacterial soap
- Pot
- Rubbing alcohol
- Paper towels
Instructions
Fill a bowl with hot water. Add a few drops of antibacterial soap. Using clean hands, blend the soap and water together. Submerge the nasal aspirator in the water and let it soak. Squeeze the bulb on the nasal aspirator and let it reinflate to suction up some of the hot soapy water. Squeeze it again quickly to release the soapy water in the syringe. Do this several times to ensure you get the inside of the nasal aspirator completely clean. Empty the bowl of soapy water and rinse it clean of soap. Refill the bowl with hot water. Put the nasal aspirator in the hot water. Suction up hot water by squeezing the bulb of the nasal aspirator and allowing it to reinflate. When it is completely reinflated, squeeze the bulb quickly to release the water in the bulb. Repeat this two to three times to remove soap residue. Remove the nasal aspirator from the water and set it on a paper towel to dry. Allow it to air-dry completely before putting it away. Sterilize your nasal aspirator when you won't be using it again for a while. Boil a pot of water. Submerge the nasal aspirator in the pot of water. Let it sit in the water for 10 minutes. Remove from the water and wipe the outside of the nasal aspirator with rubbing alcohol.
