How to Baby Proof With Lever Handle Locks

Lever handle doorknobs can present a special challenge when childproofing your home. But you can baby proof effectively with lever handle locks to prevent small children from pulling down on the handles and opening doors. Because a standard doorknob cover will not fit over these doorknobs, you need a special locking mechanism. After you install the special lock over the lever doorknob, you can set the lock to prevent a child from pulling down on the handle and opening the door.

Things You'll Need

  • One lever handle lock for each doorknob (self-adhesive)

Instructions

      Move the locking mechanism to the "unlock" position by sliding it.

      Remove the adhesive backing from the lever handle lock and discard the paper.

      Fit the lock over the lever doorknob so the doorknob sits at the center of the lock opening. The lever of the doorknob should rest between a recessed area of the lock.

      Push the lock onto the door to affix the adhesive firmly onto the door.

      Move the locking mechanism to the "lock" position by sliding it. When locked, the lever handle will not move if someone pulls down on it to attempt to open the door. Move the locking mechanism to the "unlock" position by sliding it. When unlocked, the lever handle will move freely to allow anyone to pull down on it to open the door.
