How to Make Your Own Reusable Nappies
If you are a parent short of cash and the cost of disposable nappies is overwhelming -- or better still -- you want to help out the environment by recycling your baby's nappies, then there is an old fashioned solution. Make a reusable nappy out of cloth which can be washed and used over and over again.
Things You'll Need
- White toweling fabric
- Dressmakers scissors
- Sewing machine
- Nappy pin
- Washing detergent
- Washing machine
Instructions
Buy about four meters of white soft terry toweling fabric from your local haberdashery store to make several nappies. Use thin white towels as an alternative. Cut the terry toweling into 50 cm squares with a sharp pair of dressmakers scissors. Sew a narrow seam (about 0.5 cm) on the cut ends on a sewing machine for neatness and to keep the material from fraying through use. Remove dirty nappy. Put it to the side for the moment so that you can put the fresh nappy on your baby. Fold the nappy into a triangle by taking hold of one corner and folding it over to the opposite corner of the nappy. Place the baby onto the nappy so that the longest edge of the triangle is the waist of the nappy. Bring the bottom tip of the nappy (which should be between the baby's legs) up to cover the baby's bottom. Bring one side corner to the front to fasten the 2 corners together with a nappy pin. Repeat the last step to fasten the other side corner of the nappy to the front. Make sure to put your own hand in between the nappy and the baby's skin to prevent stabbing the baby with the nappy pins. Dispose of the solid waste from the dirty nappy in the toilet. Pre-soak the nappy in a solution of hot water and washing detergent. Transfer to the washing machine and wash on a cool cycle. Hang the nappy out on the line to dry so that you can use the nappy again.
