How to Have Patience With Newborns

You love your newborn baby, but his constant cries and demands for attention are more than you can bear. You may feel like the newborn has taken over your life and you're no longer able to sleep, eat or relax when you want to, especially if you're alone with the baby for most of the day. If your newborn's crying tests your patience, you can soothe your frazzled nerves by giving yourself some much needed TLC.

Instructions

    • 1

Realize that your baby will not stay a newborn forever. You may feel exhausted, stressed out and impatient with your child now, but this will not last.

    • 2

Create a schedule for your newborn so both you and he will know what to expect each day. For example, try to feed the baby breakfast, read him a story or put him down for a nap at the same time daily. But according to Kathryn Akin, an associate professor of pediatrics, your schedule should be flexible, not rigid. Never ignore your baby's hunger cries just because it isn't time to eat yet. Feed your baby whenever he asks for food. Let the baby sleep when he's tired even if it's not nap time.

    • 3

Ask someone, such as your partner or a friend, to watch the baby while you catch up on chores or sleep.

    • 4

Take a nap when the baby sleeps. When he's awake, the newborn may demand your constant attention, leaving you little time to rest. Lack of sleep can make you feel irritable and impatient with the baby. If you're unable to nap in the middle of the day, take the time to do something relaxing that you enjoy, such as reading a book or watching a favorite TV show.

    • 5

Stop thinking that you need to have a spotless home. You may have kept your home dust-free before the baby arrived, but for now, relax your standards so you don't get stressed out about cleaning. Only clean what's necessary, such as the dishes and the laundry.

    • 6

Calm your newborn down when he cries. Try feeding your baby, changing his diaper or putting him down to nap. Singing or reading to the baby may relax him. Many babies enjoy riding in the car; it often stops the tears and causes the baby to fall asleep.

    • 7

Take care of yourself by eating healthy meals, bathing and getting enough rest. If you have time, squeeze some exercise or physical activity into your day.

    • 8

Join a group for new mothers, or start one of your own. A mother's group gives you social contact with people who understand what you're going through. You can often find mothers' groups through your local hospital or pediatrician's office.
