How to Calm a Baby That Has Gas

Babies cry -- sometimes they cry a lot -- and it̵7;s often difficult to determine the cause. Immature digestive systems make it difficult for babies to expel excess gas from gas pockets within the intestines. Gas may become so severe that the abdomen sounds like a drum when you tap on it. This buildup of gas is very painful, as it would be to an adult. Unfortunately, crying is a baby̵7;s only form of communication. If home remedies don̵7;t help calm the baby and relieve the problem, talk to your child̵7;s pediatrician. She may need an examination to ensure that there are no underlying causes or physical abnormalities.

Things You'll Need

  • Baby wrap or sling
  • Simethicone drops or gripe water

Instructions

Lay your baby on your lap, on his belly. The gentle pressure helps dispel gas. You can also try holding your baby in the football hold, with his belly against your forearm. This provides the same kind of pressure that may be soothing and help relieve the gas. Do not lay your baby down to sleep on his belly; always lay him on his back to sleep to reduce the chance of SIDS.

Place your baby on her back and gently move her legs in a bicycling motion. This exercise stimulates the digestive system and can help move gas bubbles and get things moving. Bicycle her legs for as long as she̵7;ll let you, preferably for several minutes if possible.

Wear your baby on your chest or your back in a baby wrap or sling. These carriers also provide gentle pressure to the baby̵7;s stomach which can help relieve gas. Additionally, the close proximity also calms babies and may encourage sleep when nothing else works. Wearing your baby also frees up your hands so you can get other things done.

Talk to your doctor about using simethicone drops or gripe water to help with the gas. Simethicone is an over-the-counter medication that helps break up gas bubbles. It works for some babies, but not as well for others. Gripe water is a homeopathic remedy, available in drug stores, grocery stores and online. It contains fennel, chamomile, peppermint, ginger and other ingredients to help soothe gas pains. Always check with your doctor before offering a medication or supplement.
