How to Make a Balm for Diaper Rash

The diaper rash that makes your baby so uncomfortable and can be downright painful may be caused by infection or yeast, acid in the stool, ammonia from urine or a diaper with material he is sensitive to. Keeping the area clean and dry is the best diaper rash treatment, according to Medline Plus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health. When this alone doesn't work, many parents turn to creams and ointments to sooth their baby's bottoms. You can make your own diaper balm and experiment with ingredients to create the balm that is just right for your baby̵7;s bum.

Choose ingredients for the diaper balm. You can find recipes for homemade diaper balm or cream on the Internet, or create your own. For example, the website "Keeper of the Home" lists a simple recipe using just three ingredients: zinc oxide powder, coconut oil and beeswax. The Pediatric Associates of Connecticut provides a recipe for stubborn rashes that uses 3 oz. A&D or Aquaphor cream, 3 oz. zinc oxide cream and 3 tsp. of Maalox liquid. Jeffers, Mann & Artman Pediatric's website shares a recipe for ̶0;Magic Butt Cream̶1; that calls for mixing equal parts of Lotrimin AF, zinc oxide and 1% hydrocortisone cream together. Common ingredients include zinc oxide, beeswax, coconut oil, cocoa butter, olive oil, lanolin, bentonite clay, Shea butter and essential oils.

Measure and mix your chosen ingredients. If you are mixing creams, ointments or other liquid forms together, you can simply measure and mix the ingredients in a sterile bowl or container. If you are mixing ingredients that require melting, such as beeswax, you can use a double boiler to melt over low heat. Follow the recipe̵7;s instructions. Generally recipes call for adding liquid ingredients, such as oils, to the melted wax. Powdered ingredients are generally added last. You can use an electric mixer or whip your concoction by hand.
