Maturational Activities for an Infant

Maturational activities refer to developmental activities for babies and infants. Some activities contribute to the development of motor skills, hearing, identification and senses. As babies are exposed to a variety of movements, noises, games, sounds and other activities, they begin to achieve skills that are appropriate to their age range.

  1. Playing

    • Spend time daily with your baby helping him explore the world around him. An easy way to do this is to play games with your baby. Peek A Boo, Pat A Cake and other childish songs with hand motions allow you to keep the baby entertained while he is learning. Rolling balls, knocking down blocks and touching new textures are all part of playing with him.

    Music

    • Playing music for your baby helps her recognize noises and associate them with certain people, items and animals. Music is a great way to help her fall asleep, keep her entertained and soothe her. Classical music is a favorite for babies because it has calming sounds that allow them to feel safe in their environment.

    Movement

    • Dancing to music is one way to help your baby move around the home. Keep him safe by holding him properly while dancing and he will enjoy the rhythm of your movements. When he is on the floor, help your baby move from side to side as he learns to turn over. Although he sleeps a lot in the infant stage, keeping him active teaches him how to use his arms and legs for movement later on.

    Touching
