How to Make a Minky Dot Blanket

Minky Dot fabric is a very soft fabric that can be used to make blankets for your baby or toddler. People like to use Minky Dot fabric for baby blankets or to make taggy blankets, which are blankets with tags sewn around the edges for a baby to play with. You can even make a soft changing pad cover out of Minky Dot fabric, but the most popular choice remains the Minky Dot blanket.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 yard of Minky Dot fabric
  • 1 yard of cotton fabric
  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • Carpeted floor
  • Pins
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron

Instructions

    • 1

Buy the Minky Dot fabric of your choice from a craft store and choose a pre-shrunk cotton fabric in a color that complements the Minky Dot fabric.

    • 2

Using a rotary cutter and mat, cut the Minky Dot fabric into a 31-by-31 inch square.

    • 3

Using a rotary cutter and mat, cut the cotton fabric into a 30-by-30 inch square. You want the cotton fabric to be a little smaller than the Minky Dot fabric because you will use the cotton fabric as a guide while sewing and trim the excess Minky Dot fabric before turning the blanket.

    • 4

Lay the Minky Dot fabric right side up on a carpeted floor. Lay the cotton fabric right side down on top of the Minky Dot fabric. Line up the top right corners of the two pieces of fabric. The Minky Dot fabric will be slightly larger than the cotton fabric.

    • 5

Pin the two fabrics together by pinning each corner of the blanket and the middle of all sides of the blanket. Then add pins all around the perimeter of the blanket, spaced 1 inch apart.

    • 6

Thread your sewing machine and set a medium stitch level and medium tension.

    • 7

Sew beginning halfway down the first side of the blanket. Go slowly, removing pins before you sew over them.

    • 8

Sew all around the blanket, stopping 5 inches before you reach the point where you started sewing.

    • 9

Trim excess Minky Dot fabric from your blanket.

    • 10

Turn the Minky Dot blanket right side out at the 5-inch opening.

    • 11

Fold in the edges of the opening of the blanket. Use a hot iron to press the folded edges of the Minky Dot blanket together. You want a nice crease at the opening so that the cotton and Minky fabric will be stitched when you topstitch the blanket. Pin the opening closed.

    • 12

Topstitch all the way around the Minky Dot blanket using a ¼-inch seam allowance and making sure you sew the opening completely closed.
