Problems Attaching a Baby's Mobile
Not all baby mobiles are suited for every crib. For example, different cribs have different side-bar widths and shapes. It is important for a parent to install the crib mobile in a way that is safe for the baby while taking advantage of all of its benefits, such as providing visual stimulation for the baby and calming nap-time music.

Rail Size
-
The rail size on cribs varies depending on the style of the crib. Some cribs have thinner rails, which are best suited for crib mobiles. Others have thicker rails, which can make mobile installation more difficult. If you cannot find an area on the crib rails where the mobile fastens properly, you may not be able to use the mobile. You may be able to find another way to fasten the mobile to the wall or ceiling instead, but make sure that it is secure and will not fall onto the baby. Some mobiles also come with special attachment pieces that allow for installation on wider rails.
Rail Shape
-
Some crib rails are not uniform around all sides of the crib. Many mobiles are installed along the longer side of the crib that is against the wall. This position affords the baby the best view of the mobile. However, some cribs, especially those that can be changed into a full-size bed, offer an arched rail along this side of the crib. A mobile often cannot be attached to this arched side securely. Instead, position the mobile along the near side of the crib or on the shorter side at the foot of the crib.
Development of Baby
-
While some babies do well without the mobile once they are a little older, others may enjoy the mobile for a longer period of time. However, most mobiles warn parents against using them once the baby is able to stand and reach the mobile. It becomes a dangerous object if the baby is able to pull it down. If you have a baby that still relies on the mobile for sleeping, use an alternate installation method, such as securing it to the wall or suspending it from the ceiling where the baby cannot reach it and pull it down.
Stability
-
If you have purchased a second-hand mobile or are using one that belonged to you as a baby, note that the attachment methods have changed over the years. Therefore, it is important to check the stability of a used mobile before sharing it with your baby. If you no longer have the instructions, it can be even more difficult. Check for missing parts. It is best not to use a mobile that cannot be installed per manufacturer instructions or that you cannot make stable.
