Infant Art Activities
Introducing infants to art at a young age will help them develop their motor skills and expose them to the concepts of color and shape. Art projects that use simple materials found at home will help expose infants to the concept of art.

Tearing Paper
-
Something as simple as tearing up colored paper is an ideal art project for infants, according to the Mississippi State University Extension Service. All parents need is construction paper in a variety of colors and patterns. Give the paper to the infants and allow them to tear and crumble it, while talking with the infant about the color and texture.
Colored Socks
-
Entertain your infant with clean socks in different sizes, colors and patterns. Place the socks on the baby's hands and feet, and move the socks in front of his face to draw attention to them. Teach and talk to the baby about the textures and colors.
Colored Water
-
Playing with colored water gives an infant a tactile way to experience art, according to the Mississippi State University Extension Service. Seat the child securely in a high chair and pour a small amount of water in the high chair tray. Add two drops of non-toxic food coloring to the water and gently glide the infant's hands to mix the food coloring with the water. Talk about the color of the water and how it's changing.
Clay
-
Give infants a piece of clay to explore while you supervise. Allow the children to poke at it, mold it and even explore it with their mouths, says researchers at the Child Study and Development Center at the University of New Hampshire. This allows them to become comfortable with an art medium, all while developing their imaginations, they say.
