How Can I Listen to My Baby's Heartbeat at Home?
When you're pregnant, it's comforting to know that your baby's heart is beating normally. Up until recently though, there wasn't a convenient way to do that, because the equipment needed was at a doctor's office. Today you can rent or purchase a home fetal monitoring device. This lets you listen to your baby's heartbeat by placing the sensor from the fetal monitoring device on your stomach and listening.
Things You'll Need
- Fetal monitoring device
Instructions
Plug in and turn on the fetal monitoring device. Sit in a comfortable position and if possible, with a full bladder as it may help with sound detection. Place the gel from the fetal monitoring kit onto the transducer head on the device. Adjust the volume control on the side of the transducer head to an acceptable sound level. Put the head of the transducer on the abdomen above where the pubic bones meet. Slide the transducer head slowly across the abdomen, tilting the head from side to side as you move, until you start to hear a consistent and quick beating sound, similar to the sound of a galloping horse. Move the head until that beating sound is as loud as possible. Look at the display to read the baby's heartbeat, and adjust the volume to your listening preference.
