What to Do With a 6 Month Old While Exercising on the Treadmill & Elliptical?
Finding time to exercise is challenging enough, but keeping your 6-month old entertained while you do it is likely even more of a challenge. At six months, babies begin to be mobile, sliding and wiggling to as many places as they can. That makes it even more difficult for mothers or fathers to exercise on a treadmill or elliptical. Fortunately, with a little practice, your child can get used to your exercise routine.
Instructions
Begin with short segments of five to 10 minutes at a time throughout the day. You may have to stop, but if you fit in three or four short exercise segments, you̵7;ll be on your way to losing weight and getting toned. Take advantage of naps. While it may be tempting to nap yourself, use your baby̵7;s nap time to squeeze in a session on the treadmill or elliptical. Start playing with your baby and then slowly disengage yourself. Continue talking to your baby, but maintain your distance. Keep trying this for longer and longer periods of time to get your baby used to playing alone for a period of time. Put toys in front of your baby for entertainment. Try a busy board, stuffed animals without ribbons or eyes that can be pulled off, wooden blocks or a plastic bowl and wooden spoon. Once your baby begins to lose interest in the toy, give her a different object and get back onto the treadmill or elliptical. Put your baby in an exercise saucer or jumper while you exercise. This can keep your baby entertained and safe while you get in your workout. Hire a babysitter to watch your baby for a short time while you exercise. This method will allow you to exercise for a specific amount of time, without interruptions. Talk to another parent who also has exercise goals. While you exercise, have the other parent watch your baby, and when she exercises, offer to watch her child.
