How to Clean a PlayStation 3 System
No matter where you store it, your PS3 is likely to be a dust magnet, and its once-pristine surface may get smudged as you use it over time. It's a good idea to regularly clean your console and its accessories. This doesn't just keep it looking good, but also helps keep it working well. Before you start, make sure to follow Sony's recommendations for cleaning.
-
Clean Cables and Connectors
-
Before you start cleaning your PS3, unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet and disconnect any connected cables from the console. It's worth making sure that cables and their connectors are clean and dust-free. If not, they may not connect correctly. Wipe dust or dirt off cables with a clean dry cloth, checking that the connecting end of the cable is clean. Also at the connecting ports on your console. If they look dusty, gently clean the dust out in the same manner.
Clear the Vents
-
It's important to keep your PS3's vents clean -- these are part of the console's cooling system and they won't work if they get clogged up with dust or debris. Be careful not to push dust into the system as this may damage it. If you can't easily wipe dust out with a clean dry cloth, Sony recommends that you use the hose attachment of a vacuum cleaner to suck it out. Handheld vacuums also work.
Polishing the Exterior
-
If you allow dust or dirt to build up on the outside of your PS3, it may get into the vents, causing damage to the console itself. To clean the exterior, wipe down all of its surfaces with a soft cloth to remove dust. If the console is still dirty or has smudges on it, dampen the cloth with a little water and wipe it again. It may take a few tries to clean areas that you touch regularly, like those around the Power and Eject buttons.
Try a Fan Test to Self-Clean
-
Sony has a fan test that may dislodge dust inside your PS3, working as a self-cleaning tool. Do be aware that this test is not recommended by Sony as a cleaning method and there is no evidence that it works, so you run it at your own risk. To run the test, plug in your PS3 but make sure that the Power switch is off -- the test won't work in standby. Hold down the "Eject" button and press the "Power" switch until you hear the fans start to work. Once the test is done, your PS3 will go into standby mode.
What Not to Do
-
According to Sony, you shouldn't use compressed air to clean your PS3, especially around the vents. This could just blow dust and dirt into the console's interior rather than removing it. Typically, you should always use a soft cloth; avoid abrasive materials that might damage the PS3's surface. Sony also recommends that you don't use solvents, chemicals or treated cloths to clean the console or controllers. These may cause surface damage and, if they spill inside, internal damage. Keep in mind, you should only clean the exterior of your console. If you take it apart to try to clean inside, you'll invalidate your warranty.
