Infant Art Activities for Mother's Day
With a little help from an adult family member or a daycare teacher, infants can create meaningful and creative Mother&'s Day gifts. These gifts can showcase the emerging personality of the infant while celebrating motherhood, and can eventually become cherished heirlooms or family keepsakes. Supervise the infant at all times during any art projects to prevent the accidental ingestion of any art materials.

Baby&'s First Handprint
-
Making a baby&'s handprint for the first time on Mother&'s Day is a memorable way to mark the occasion. Dip the infant&'s handprint in colored paint, then make an imprint on a sheet of blank white paper. Alternatively, use white paint on black paper for a stark contrast. Frame the print, and you have a chic, modern work of art to hang on the wall. When choosing a paint, make sure to look for acrylic paint marked non-toxic at the craft store. Another safe paint for crafts is watercolor paint with an "AP certified non-toxic" label. One paint to avoid is milk paint, as some infants may be allergic to the dairy products used to make the paint.
Photographs
-
According to Baby Center, most children understand relatively simple requests between 12 and 15 months, so you can talk to them and use simple statements when creating a piece of art. One way to commemorate an infant&'s mother is to set out a series of photographs from a magazine or a personal collection. These can be anything from abstract photographs of flowers to landscapes to photographs of the baby&'s mother with different backgrounds or doing different tasks. Ask the infant: "Which do you think Mommy would like?" You can then frame the photo that the infant has chosen.
Typewriter Art
-
Allow your infant to have fun with a working typewriter. A random collection of letters, spaces and symbols, when framed, can become a work of art. As a supervising adult, you can hide the words "Happy Mother&'s Day" in the middle of the page between the infant&'s typing. Use an office typewriter or find an old typewriter at a garage sale or online.
Play Dough
-
Have your infant create an original sculpture out of play dough. You can use a brand-name dough or create your own by mixing together 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup salt and 2 tablespoons cream of tartar. Heat 1 cup of water until boiling and pour over dry ingredients. Stir in 2 tablespoons oil and mix until incorporated.
Have your infant create the play-dough sculpture. An adult can write "Happy Mother&'s Day" and your infant&'s name at the bottom. Preserve the sculpture by coating it with craft glue and letting it air dry, or use your microwave as a kiln. To use your microwave, heat the sculpture on high for one minute, spray it with water to moisten it and then microwave it for another five minutes.
