How to Teach Children to Put a Sock on a Foot
You may take for granted the life skills you have learned over the years, but your child is in the midst of acquiring them. Simple tasks, liking putting on socks, may seem easy to you, but can be a challenge for unskilled fingers. Help your child learn to dress himself by teaching how to put those socks on his little tootsies.
Things You'll Need
- Socks
Instructions
Grab a pair of socks for you and a pair for your child. Make sure your child̵7;s socks are the right size for her feet. Socks that are too small will make the learning process harder. Have your child watch you put a sock on your foot first. Do every step slowly and deliberately, talking him through the process. Your child learns a lot throughout the day by just watching you, so use this to your advantage on the sock-learning front. Ask your child to pick up one of her socks. Show her how to use her outstretched fingers to hold the top open. Tell her to sit on the floor, bend her knee and steady her heel on the floor in front of her. Encourage her to hold her foot and toes as still as she can while she moves the sock over her toes. Once she has the sock over all of her toes, explain how she should grab the sides of the sock and pull it up the rest of the way to her ankle. Repeat with the other foot. Take the socks off of your child's feet and have him practice a few more times so he gets the motions down. As with any skill, this takes time so be patient and encouraging. Praise your child̵7;s efforts and successes. This will help boost her self-esteem, increase his confidence in his abilities and encourage him to keep trying to master this skill.
