Safety 1st Tot Lock Installation
Once a baby becomes mobile, most parents begin babyproofing their home to keep potentially dangerous items out of the toddler's hands. Cabinet door locks are available in a wide variety of styles, but most remain visible once installed, and many also require two hands to operate. The Tot Lok by Safety 1st is unique in that it uses a strong magnet to secure the door in a closed position. To open the lock, simply place the magnetic key on the outside of the door. All of the lock hardware is hidden on the inside of the cupboard, and the lock can be disabled when not needed.
Things You'll Need
- Pencil
- Tape measure
- Drill
- 9/32" drill bit
- Phillips screwdriver
Instructions
Peel the paper backing labeled "1" off of the installation template guide. Open the door of the cupboard you wish to lock and place the installation template guide just inside the cupboard with the foam strip portion rounding the corner to the outside surface of the cupboard. Mark the two screw placements labeled with a "+" using a pencil. Remove the backing paper from the foam strip, labeled "4." Close the cupboard door firmly then reopen. The installation template guide will have moved to the door side of the cupboard. Use a pencil to mark the four screw positions labeled with a "+." Measure the thickness of the cupboard door using your tape measure. Place the drill depth gauge on your drill bit with the tip exposed, measuring to the width of the door less 1/8 inch. Drill one hole in the door where the template is marked with a "+" with a circle around it. Make sure not to drill all the way through the door. Align the striking plate with the two pencil markings made in Step 3. Use the screwdriver to secure the striking plate to the cupboard with two screws. Attach the extension pin to the lock assembly if the width of the door measures 5/8 inch to 1 1/8 inches, and add the extension slug if the door width exceeds 1 1/8 inches. If the door is less than 5/8 inch, no extension is needed. Align the lock assembly with the four pencil markings and the drilled hole in the door. Secure it in place with four screws. Move the red locking device on the lock assembly so the word "Unlock" is facing out. Close the cabinet door. It will now be locked. Place the magnetic key over the area of the door where the lock is installed. The lock will open.
