How to Prevent Wind Burn in Toddlers
Winter months can be particularly harsh on skin -- with the bitter temperatures and moisture-sapping winds -- this is especially true for the tender skin of your toddler. Stepping up your tot̵7;s skin-care regimen and actively taking steps to protect her, can go a long way in preventing painful and irritating winter skin conditions such as wind burn.
Things You'll Need
- Skin cleanser for children
- Petroleum jelly

Start with a gentle cleanser. This helps keep your tot̵7;s skin glowing and smooth rather than dry and flaky. Soak your child in warm water and use a gentle, moisturizing soap to wash her up. Limit soak time and too hot water temps, as both sap the skin's natural oils. Pat your kiddo dry after bath -- leaving some moisture on the skin -- and immediately apply a moisturizer on the damp skin to lock in the moisture. Petroleum jelly is an excellent moisturizer for sensitive skin, as it does not contain harsh fragrances, dyes or other irritating ingredients. Bundle your tot up; exposed skin quickly loses moisture in the elements, which is the primary cause of windburn. Apply petroleum jelly to any exposed skin prior to heading outdoors. Don̵7;t forget your little one's kisser, petroleum jelly or toddler chap stick can protect her lips from drying out and cracking. Hydrate from the inside out by making sure your child drinks plenty of water in the winter months. Dry indoor air, harsh winds and getting slightly sweaty in a snowsuit all dehydrate her, the more water she drinks the better for her skin.
