Are Airport Full Body Scans Harmful for Toddlers?
With the advanced technology now used to screen passengers before boarding an airplane, you might be worried about whether or not a full body scanner is safe or appropriate for your toddler. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began using the Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) machines in 2008, and these machines are the screening method of choice for airport passengers throughout the United States. Keeping yourself informed of the screening process, risks and your rights regarding airport screening might make your next trip through security as stress free as possible.

The Technology
-
There are AIT machines in 160 airports nationwide according to the TSA. AIT machines use millimeter wave technology to bounce electromagnetic waves off the passenger̵7;s body, generating a generic image on the screening officer̵7;s screen. The radiation that a passenger receives during the screening process is 1,000 times less than international radiation guidelines and limits, according to the TSA. AIT machines are safe for use in screening all passengers, including children, pregnant women and passengers with medical implants.
The Purpose
-
The TSA implemented the AIT machines to detect security threats beyond metal-based threats and explosives. The AIT machine detects material concealed in a passenger's pockets and clothing and transfers that information to a screen in a secure room that shows a generic outline of the passenger as well as information on where the material is located on the body. If you do not have any potential threats located on your body, the screen will only show a green OK message with no outline; eliminating any worries you have about a stranger looking at an image of your toddler̵7;s body.
Screening Tips
-
Toddlers and any children under the age of 12 no longer need to remove shoes before going through the screening process. In order for your toddler to go through the AIT machine, he will need to be able to stand still for 10 seconds with his hands above his head. You are not able to enter the AIT machine with your toddler and if your toddler does alarm while in the AIT machine, a TSA officer will attempt to determine the cause of the alarm and place your child back into the AIT for a second screening or resolve the alarm by using a pat down. Before entering the AIT machine, remove all items from pockets including toys, tissues and coins.
Opting Out
-
If you are uncomfortable with your toddler going through the AIT machine, you have the option of opting out. Opting out will result in your toddler receiving screening in another manner, either through the normal X-ray machine or with a modified pat down performed by an officer of the same gender as your child. You have the right to be present through the screening process and should voice any concerns you have about the procedure to the TSA officer in a respectful manner. Your toddler will not receive clearance through security unless she is screened using the proper procedure.
