How to Potty Train a 4 Year-Old Boy
Potty training, like other milestones, happens at different times for different kids. If your child is four years old and not potty trained, it's important to not get frustrated. Instead, start the process again with a new approach. The most important thing is to be patient, as well as diligent with the potty training process. Children need consistency in order to be successful.
Things You'll Need
- Baby doll
- Toddler potty
- Big kid underwear
Instructions
Buy a baby doll that "pees" when it is given fluids. Have a special toddler potty that is just for your toddler to use in the bathroom. Have your toddler give the doll water, and then show the doll using the toddler potty. This gives your child a great visual of what they should be doing. Once the doll uses the potty, give the doll lots of praise. This shows your toddler that the doll has made you very proud and it will motivate him to do the same. Set aside a couple of days when you will be at home with your toddler, and plan to have him drink lots of liquids. Take away the child's diapers, and replace them with big kid underwear. This will allow you to know the second your child has an accident. Ask your child throughout the day if they need to go potty. If they say no, ask them to try anyway. Do this several times, so your child develops muscle memory. They will learn to go by themselves throughout the day. Give lots of praise whenever your child uses the potty successfully. Remain patient if your child has an accident. And remember consistency will pay off in the end.
