Where to Take Preschoolers on a Field Trip

Preschoolers learn a lot of new information in school, but sometimes it can be a change of pace to get out of the classroom and learn in a different environment. This is where the benefit of field trips comes in. The preschoolers can visit local businesses such as farms or grocery stores to learn about where their food comes from. They can also visit fire stations or police stations to learn about safety.

  1. Farms

    • There are a variety of different types of farms where you can take toddlers. These can include fruit based farms such as apple orchards or pumpkin patches. These farms will give the preschoolers a chance to pick their own fruit or small pumpkins. Check with the farms ahead of time to find out what activities can be arranged for the preschoolers. At the apple orchard the operators of the orchard could be willing to show the children how apple juices or apple cider is made. At the pumpkin patch, an activity such as decorating the pumpkins the preschoolers pick with magic markers can be arranged.

    Stores

    • Preschoolers can be entertained by a large variety of activities because they are new to them. Try arranging a field trip with your local grocery store. The grocery store can show the children where all the supplies are kept and each of the different departments such as the florist, meat department and bakery departments. You could even arrange for the children to get a cookie as a treat at the end of the field trip.

      Speaking of baked goods, contact a donut shop in your local area. The donut shop might be willing to demonstrate to the kids how donuts are made. The children could even get an opportunity to decorate the donuts while there, and take their donuts home as a souvenir of the field trip.

    Police and Fire Stations

    • It's never too early to teach children about safety and public servants that can help them if they are ever in trouble. Arrange with your local police or fire station for a field trip for the preschoolers. They can see a police car, fire truck and ambulance. The preschoolers might even be able to go into the vehicle and see how heavy a firehose is. This will also give a member of the fire department or police department a chance to speak to the preschoolers about home safety along with safety while in public, and how if a child is ever lost what they should know to tell a police officer so the officer can help them. This can emphasize the importance of knowing their name, parent's names, phone number, and address at an early age. The police or fire station might be able to arrange to have hats for the children as a souvenir of their field trip to take home.
