Rainy Day Games for 2 Year Olds

Toddlers love to explore and be outside, but when rainy days come, it doesn't mean you need to turn on the TV or get all the toys out. There are many creative games your 2-year-old can enjoy inside. From art activities to household chores, these games take minimal effort but can entertain and teach your 2-year-old valuable lessons.

  1. Bathtub Fun

    • Since your 2-year-old can't be outside in the pool, make your bathtub an indoor pool. Fill the tub with water, water toys and balls. Blow bubbles for your toddler to try to catch, and let him splash all he wants. Another idea is to put your toddler in the bathtub without water and give him finger paint to color the tub. Give your toddler chocolate pudding, shaving cream and liquid gelatin. Allow your 2-year-old toddler to make as much mess as he wants, then fill up the tub and give him a good bath.

    Pretend Play

    • Toddlers love to play games with their imagination. Give your 2-year-old the props she needs to play pretend games; look for old clothes, shoes and hats in your closet to give to your toddler. Create a fort by covering a table with a sheet. Allow your toddler to hide and play inside her fort. Or, pretend to go camping. Set up a tent in your family room or build your own with blankets and chairs. Sleep in sleeping bags, roast marshmallows in the kitchen and play with flashlights.

    Housework

    • Toddlers enjoy helping and receiving assignments, and it also boosts their confidence that you trust them enough to help. Let your 2-year-old help with laundry. Instruct him to sort the clothes by color before folding. Another idea is to get all the toys out and sort them. Your 2-year-old can play with the toys while you decide which ones go to charity and which ones stay. Then have your child help you sort them into baskets. Your toddler can also help you unload the dishwasher, sweep and dust. Turn these activities into games by timing your toddler.

    Art Activities

    • Most toddlers enjoy art activities, and they help her be more creative. They also give you some time to rest while she is busy creating art pieces. Set your 2-year-old in her high chair and have her paint with finger paint. A fun idea is to paint doilies on construction paper, by painting on top of them and then removing the doilies. Create stamps for your toddler out of potatoes by cutting them in half and sculpting a shape. Make new crayons out of old ones by melting them on a muffin tin in the oven and letting them cool.

    • Unless you want to see your little ones turn into Thing One and Thing Two -- just like on that cold, wet day in Dr. Seuss "The Cat in the Hat" -- having a rainy day plan for toddlers is a must. When the weathers too wet to play at the park
    • Occupy your little one with fun, safe and educational games that the whole family can enjoy together. There are various activities for a family to do with their toddler such as arts-and-crafts, outdoor activities, indoor activities and learning games
    • Whether the weather is rainy or cold, preschoolers need 60 minutes of daily structured physical exercise, according to the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, a non-profit organization of teachers, coaches and researchers. Besides
