Indoor Activities for a Group of 12 - 18 Month Old Children

Young children need to stay active, but when the weather is not cooperating, this can be difficult. Nonetheless, you can still get together with a group of 12 to 18-month-old children for a bit of indoor fun. The types of activities you choose depend on your child's personality and ability levels.

  1. At Home

    • Home can be a comfortable place to invite a group of toddlers to play. You can simply allow some free play time by setting out several boxes of toys -- blocks, cars, dolls or toy food, for example -- and letting them play while the parents socialize. Alternatively, plan to do group activities at a large table, such as painting or playing with play dough. Create "feelie boxes" by pouring items with different textures -- oatmeal, sugar, cereal and flour -- into a box along with cups and spoons for scooping and a few small toys to bury and find again. Let each child play with one for a few minutes, then switch boxes.

    Free Public Spaces

    • Your community is probably home to some free public spaces that can act as a gathering place for young toddlers. In particular, look for libraries, gyms or community centers that have kid space. If they don't have scheduled programs, ask if you can start one. This might be a good place to have a story time or basic music lesson with simple instruments and favorite kids songs. You might be able to bring your own craft supplies to make a simple craft.

    Paid Public Spaces

    • Another alternative is to take your child to a space that is designed for groups of children, like a kids' museum or play center. In a place like this, children might be able to climb on climbing structures, play in sand boxes and dress up to play pretend. Call ahead of time or look at the website to see what types of activities might be good for your group.

    Setting Expectations

    • At this age range, children have a wide range of abilities and interests. Some may be taking their first steps, while others have been walking for months. It's important to note that parents should always be present for group activities with young children. Additionally, children this age don't often play with other children, but tend to play alongside other children. If you're waiting for your child to make a friend, you'll probably have to wait a bit longer.
