How to Survive High School As a Junior

A student who is a junior in high school is faced with a variety of situations. All may be considered part of growing up since learning to handle a variety of situations is essential in life. However, around the age of 17, students are often times faced with decisions which can effect their lives for the short and long terms.

      Stay focused on the primary purpose of attending school which is to gain an education and pave the way for possibly attending college. Junior year in high school is the year when many students have the opportunity to take advanced placement or honors classes. These classes, while challenging academically, are necessary for college preparation.

      Strive to achieve a balance between friendship, school work, family, and extra curricular activities. All of these are important. However, many times students will place more emphasis on friends or sports. Some may allow them to dominate their lives. It is important to understand where one wants to go; keeping the focus on that will help as you begin the final half of high school.

      Choose friends wisely. Make sure your chosen friends have similar goals and aspirations. It is also wise to choose friends who will not place unwanted pressure or temptation to participate in illegal or immoral activities. As upper classmen, juniors are often times included in new activities and parties. This can be a new world with new challenges.

      Become involved as much as possible as an upper classman. For the first time while in high school, juniors are now in a position of seniority second only to the senior class. This is the time to learn the skills and gain the knowledge necessary to be a senior with strong leadership in sports, student government and clubs.

      Seek the guidance of teachers, family members and older friends who have been there and done that. As cliche as it may sound, there are many who have made both good and bad choices.
