Sleepover Games for Teenage Guys

Outside of video games, finding fun and interactive ways to entertain the typical male teenager can often be a challenge, especially if you're planning a sleepover for your teenage son and his best buddies. While a night loaded with video games, pizza and soft drinks might sound like the ideal sleepover for any teenage guy, consider incorporating some games into the evening that don't require a joystick, but rather a good amount of physical and mental activity.

  1. Airsoft Wars

    • From an early age boys like to play war.

If you have a big backyard or access to a large open space, organize an airsoft war. Nothing gets a guy's adrenaline pumping like the idea of battle. War is what young boys have been playing for centuries; from the time they are small until late adolescence, boys have fantasized about war. According to Penny Holland, senior lecturer of early childhood studies at London Metropolitan University, "It [playing war] is very much part of them making sense of the world. It relates to timeless themes of the struggle between good and evil." Airsoft war is just one way to allow them this kind of play. Like paintball, airsoft wars are similar to tactical video games where teams compete against one another with guns that resemble real weapons. However, these weapons discharge plastic pellets rather than paint.

    Touch Football

    • A game of football has many benefits.

Kick off a good old-fashioned game of football. Whether they're playing in the street or on your front lawn, challenge the guys to get off the couch and get outside for a game of touch football. Sports are the original way to a teenage guy's heart. Give him a ball and watch him play. Not only is this an ideal way to burn off all of the pizza and potato chips they had for dinner, but it's a terrific way to build bonds with their buddies -- days of both defeat and glory that will surely last a lifetime.

    Board Games

    • Board games are both fun and healthy.

Turn off the video games and pull the board games out of the closet, especially those that challenge young minds. Pop a few big bowls of popcorn, set up a game of Monopoly, Risk, Life or Scrabble at the kitchen table and let the best man win. Board games are a fun and effective way to encourage good mental and physical health, not to mention a genuine way to create face-to-face interactions between friends.

    Eating Competitions

    • Eating contests can spark both fierce appetites and competition.

Teenage guys have a voracious appetite, so cook up some fun eating contests in your kitchen and give fun prizes to each of the winners. You could challenge the guys to a pie eating contest; have the guys put their hands behind their back and the first one to finish his pie wins. Or you could do something similar to the reality television show "Fear Factor," creating unusual and somewhat unappetizing dishes for the boys to eat while being timed. The first boy to eat these not-so-tasty dishes wins both the prize and a good dose of notoriety.
