Schools for Troubled Teens in Washington State

Troubled teens often find it hard fitting in to traditional schools. Parents in Washington State can choose to send their troubled teen to an alternative school or community. These schools and communities offer education as well as therapeutic programs to help them develop into responsible adults. Some are open to both males and females, while others only take males.

  1. Shamrock Educational Academy

    • Shamrock Educational Academy is a private school in Newman Lake, Washington. It takes adolescent males from grades 8-12. The school specializes in teens who have experienced difficulties with traditional schools and family settings. Males who have been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD and ODD can be enrolled. The academy aims to provide a positive learning environment and personalized education in order to help students reach their potential. Activities available to students include skiing, snowboarding, scuba diving certification classes and horseback riding.

    Penrith Farms

    • Penrith Farms is a specialized therapeutic community founded in 1983 in Newport, Washington. The community is open to men and women aged 18-26. A variety of programs are available, including educational, vocational and therapeutic. They accept teenagers who have strained family relationships, substance abuse issues, depression, anger management problems and defiant behavior. Students live on-site in houses for males or females. The educational program offered allows teens who haven̵7;t received a high school diploma the chance to attend a local high school or work at the alternative high school on site.

    Gray Wolf Ranch

    • Young men with an addiction problem can enroll at the Gray Wolf Ranch just outside Port Townsend, western Washington. The ranch̵7;s mission is to provide a stable environment for 14-25 year olds who are on the first steps to a sober life. Students need to have completed withdrawal or detoxification needs before entering. Education is available at Gray Wolf̵7;s learning center, which has certified teachers assisting students. The learning center is off-campus in Port Townsend̵7;s business district. A student̵7;s timetable is kept flexible to allow for sobriety meetings. Education is on a one-to-one basis and their specific learning needs will be met after an initial evaluation.

    Jubilee Youth Ranch

    • Jubilee Youth Ranch is a Christ-centered community for young, troubled men. Its mission is to give students a second chance to grow and develop into contributing members of their families and local community. The ranch is located in Prescott, Washington. Jubilee Christian Academy on campus is an accredited private high school. Graduates will receive a Washington State high school diploma. Students are taught how they can live as Christians by changing attitude, resisting temptation, controlling anger and being obedient to God.
