How to Celebrate a Daughter's First Period

Your daughter's first period may be reason to celebrate for you, but it might be a complete nightmare for her. In order to get her excited about the reality of having cramps and bleeding for days each month, you'll need to recognize the things she needs in order to accept this major life change and what she just wants to do for fun.

Instructions

    • 1

Educate your daughter on rites of passage. For women, the three physical rites of passage are her first period, her first child and menopause. All three are beautiful and should be celebrated. After speaking with her, ask her how she'd like to celebrate.

    • 2

Keep your celebration realistic and within the family. If you take her to Disneyland because she got her first period, she's going to have pretty high expectations at other very normal rites of passage--physical, social or educational--throughout her life.

    • 3

Take her to the store with you to purchase the necessary feminine hygiene products. Have her take them to the counter and pay for them herself. Many teenagers expect their parents to do this for them well into their late teens. Nip this in the bud right away by showing her this is now an expected part of her life.

Find a way to show your daughter how to use the products appropriately. For a single father, this can be extremely sensitive. Call in another trusted female to help teach her if necessary.

Make her special celebration day a day of simply acknowledging who she is. Get a cake and put up decorations. Let her know she's important and special.
