Programs for Troubled Teens in Butler County, Ohio
The Butler County Juvenile Justice Center heard more than 650 cases involving juveniles and drugs or alcohol in 2008, more than 800 each of unruly and truancy cases and more than 1,000 cases each of offenses against property or persons, according to the Center's 2008 annual report. Community programs aimed to support and treat troubled teens, those experiencing serious emotional or personal problems and those at-risk can help prevent juvenile delinquency. Fortunately, the Butler County area has several programs for at-risk youth and troubled teens.

Talbert House North Star

Talbert House North Star is a secure residential treatment facility that serves Butler County teenage girls primarily between 12 and 17 years old. The girls being treated usually have either experienced some trauma, such as sexual abuse, are diagnosed with a mental illness or have been through the criminal justice system. Talbert House North Star offers individualized treatment that includes individual and group counseling, family therapy and psychiatric treatment. Teenage clients at Talbert House North Star stay an average of four months and, if necessary, continue educational goals through the Butler County Alternative School.

Hamilton Living Water Ministry

Hamilton Living Water Ministry, founded in 1999 and located in Hamilton, Ohio, is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and provides services for teens from junior high through high school. Living Water Ministry maintains after school programs at the "H-Town Teen Center," a place for teens to obtain homework help, computer access and participate in recreational activities. The center also organizes community service projects the youth can perform. Hamilton Living Water Ministry also performs two teen mentoring services, the RESPECT (Reducing Early Sex and Pregnancy by Educating Children and Teens) program for girls and Boyz2Men for boys. These programs work with youth who are at high risk of becoming teenage parents, getting involved with drug and substance abuse, joining gangs and getting involved with other negative behaviors.

Malachi Youth Opportunity Program

Malachi is an organization in Middletown, Ohio, that administers the "Youth Opportunities Program." The Malachi Youth Opportunities Program, or Y.O.P, targets at-risk teenagers and youth between ages 16 and 21. The main function of Malachi Y.O.P. is to prepare youth--who meet income criteria and face a barrier to employment--for educational and/or employment opportunities. The program offers teenagers both paid and unpaid work experience, tutoring services, guidance and counseling, occupational skills training and follow-up services.

LifeSpan

LifeSpan is a private, not-for-profit organization that serves Butler and Warren county residents. The organization offers several programs for adults, children, adolescents and families. LifeSpan maintains an outpatient behavioral health services program in which adolescents and teenagers can receive help from a licensed therapist. LifeSpan also operates its Functional Family Therapy (FFT) program, which targets at-risk juveniles and their families who have been referred by the court system. This intervention program provides intensive, in-home therapy for the adolescent and his entire family.
