What to Do When You Are Pregnant?

Having a baby can be exciting and scary at the same time. Whether you have been trying to get pregnant or your pregnancy is a surprise, there are many things you can do to prepare yourself when you find out you are going to have a baby.

  1. Go to the Doctor

    • One of the first things you should do when you find out you are pregnant is make an appointment with an obstetrician. If you already have a gynecologist for woman's health care, you can make an appointment with her upon finding out you are pregnant. Typically, gynecologists also are obstetricians, which is why they are referred to as an OB/GYN. A gynecologist is specialized in the health of the female reproductive system, whereas an obstetrician is specialized in pregnancy, labor and postpartum care.

At your first prenatal visit, most doctors take a blood test to confirm the pregnancy. Also, the doctor will determine your due date based on your last menstrual period. Going over your health history and that of your partner also is very important. At this time, your doctor probably will prescribe a prenatal vitamin for you to take daily. You should take this opportunity to ask any questions or go over any concerns you may have regarding your pregnancy.

    Evaluate Your Diet

    • It is very important to get proper nutrition while you are pregnant. In addition to taking a prenatal vitamin, you should try to consume a diet full of vitamins and nutrients to feed your growing baby. Limit consumption of junk food and increase your intake of foods rich in protein, iron and folic acid.

Most doctors agree you should avoid raw seafood and unpasteurized dairy products because these foods are prone to bacteria growth. Also, the Food and Drug Administration recommends limiting your intake of seafood that contains mercury.

Drinking large amounts of alcohol during pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, so you should avoid it when you are pregnant. Also, it is recommended to limit or cease your consumption of caffeinated beverages.

    Read Books

    • You probably will want to read books about pregnancy when you find out you are going to have a baby. This is a new experience for you, and there is so much to learn. Go to a bookstore and purchase books such as, "What to Expect When You're Expecting." If you do not want to purchase pregnancy books, you can always check them out from your local library. If you have any friends or relatives that recently have had a baby, ask if you can borrow their books.

    • What is a preconception checkup and why is it important? A preconception checkup helps your health care provider make sure that your body is ready for pregnancy. If you can, get your checkup from the health care provider you want to take care of you
