How to Make a Bear-Shaped Diaper Cake
A diaper cake is a gift presentation for a baby shower that puts a whole new spin on the cake concept, because it is completely made of cloth or disposable diapers the mother may use after the baby arrives. Diaper cakes can be made with any number of tiers, but three tiers are required to make a bear-shaped diaper cake: one for the bottom, one for the body and one for the head. You can also stuff the inside of the cake with gifts and necessities, such as baby bottles and pacifiers.
Things You'll Need
- Large sheet of cardboard
- Baby bottle
- Large packages of disposable or cloth diapers of various sizes
- Rubber bands
- Tape
- Sewing pins
- Marker
- Cotton balls
- Baby socks
- Baby gifts
Instructions
Place a large sheet of cardboard on the table to use for the base of your cake. Set a large plastic baby bottle in the center. Roll and secure each diaper with a rubber band or a piece of tape. Use the larger diapers to form the bottom tier of your cake and the smaller diapers for the upper tiers. Roll the diapers loosely for the bottom tier and tighter for the middle and upper tiers. Arrange each loosely rolled diaper standing on its end around the baby bottle, and attach the diapers to each other with tape, rubber bands or ribbon. The baby bottle will be removed later so you can hide gifts inside the diaper cake -- right now, it just helps you form the cake shape. Place two rolled diapers at the front of the cake to make the bear legs, and tape them in place. Continue placing the tightly rolled diapers on top of the bottom tier to form the middle tier. This tier will be the bear's body. The upper tiers are attached to the bottom tiers with small sewing pins. The top layer will have the smallest number of diapers and represent the bear's head. Draw eyes and a mouth on one of the diaper rolls for the bear's face. Glue on a cotton ball for the nose. Pin two fuzzy baby socks on the top of the tier to form bear ears. Remove the baby bottle from the center of the diaper cake, and fill the space with a variety of baby gifts, such as pacifiers, rolled-up baby blankets and baby washcloths, and small bottles of baby powder, baby wash and shampoo. You can also arrange baby toys, such as rattles, around the base of the diaper cake.
