Things to Do Before a Baby Is Born

Pregnancy is an exciting time as you wait in anticipation to meet your baby. It is also a busy time as you prepare for your little one's arrival. Spend some time preparing yourself and your house for the new addition. Once your baby arrives, you will be all ready to welcome him into your family.

  1. Research

    • Look around for gently used items.

Create a list of baby items you will need. This includes large items such as a car seat, stroller and crib, as well as smaller items such as diapers, wipes and bottles. Research items to determine which brands to buy and where to purchase them. Find out if friends or family have things you can borrow. Determine which items are essential and will be needed right away and which items you can buy after the baby is born.

    Organize

    • Sort baby clothes by size.

Set up the baby's nursery. Stock the changing table with all the supplies you will need during diaper changes. Put baby clothes away in a dresser or purchase a closet organizer. Stock the bathroom with bath supplies such as baby shampoo, washcloths and lotion. Choose an area in the kitchen to store feeding items like bottles and bibs.

    Cook and Clean

    • Seize the opportunity to de-clutter and clean your house. You will be happy you did when the baby arrives and time and energy are at a premium. This is also a good time to prepare meals such as casseroles that can be frozen and used after the baby is born. Stock the cupboard with healthy snacks you can grab quickly.

    Plan for Delivery

    • Be prepared when it is time to go to the hospital.

Consider taking a prenatal class. If you will be delivering at a hospital, take a tour and preregister. Pack your hospital bag as well as your diaper bag. Arrange childcare if you have other children and have someone ready to take care of your pets while you are away. If you will be delivering at home, make sure you have all the necessary supplies ready.

    Relax

    • Enjoy some quiet time with your partner.

Take some time to relax before the baby arrives. Write in a journal or begin your child's baby book. Get lots of rest and relish the days of sleeping in. Spend some "couple time" with your partner. See a movie, go out for dinner and enjoy each other's company.

    • One tiny word with a life-changing impact: Positive. Youve stared at the test long enough, and its finally sinking in: youre pregnant! The barrage of thoughts about what to do next is overwhelming, but theres one order of business that sticks out:
    • Theres no doubt about it—pregnancy can be an exciting yet confusing time for both you and your pregnant partner. If youve already made it through the first eight months, youve probably gone through cravings, mood swings, morning sickness, new sexu
