Early in the embryonic stage, your unborn baby looks like a mass of cells. But by week seven, she already has a distinct shape with visible eyelids, elbow joints, and a tailbone.
Eight to Nine Weeks

By week eight, your baby is about the size of a kidney bean and has distinct arms and legs. His fingers are beginning to form and are still webbed at this point. At week nine, your baby's eyelids are fused closed until week 27.

Your baby begins to grow hair at week 19. By week 20, his skin is covered with a white grease-like substance designed to protect his skin from long exposure to amniotic fluid. Also at this time, your baby is between 8 and 10 inches long.
25 to 26 Weeks

By week 25, your baby begins to develop baby fat, which will smooth out her wrinkled skin. Boy babies begin to show their genitals at week 26.

At week 29, your baby's head is growing larger in order to accommodate her growing brain. Fingernails and toenails are completely developed by week 32. The following weeks until her birth, your baby will continue to grow baby fat in order to help stabilize her body temperature after birth.
