How to Treat Head Lice During Pregnancy
Head lice can be a difficult problem to eradicate even when a woman is not pregnant. These parasitic insects can cause itching, rashes and irritation. Small eggs called nits are attached to the hair, close to the scalp. Nits and live lice are so small they can be difficult to remove, and if any nits are missed the life cycle can begin all over again. The Organization of Teratology Information Specialists reports that commercial lice killing preparations are safe to use during pregnancy. Any treatment used should be discussed with a doctor before application.
Things You'll Need
- Commercial lice preparation containing permethrin or piperonyl butoxide
- Fine comb (nit comb)
Instructions
Clean all household items which have come into contact with a lice carrier. This includes clothing, bed linens, towels and hairbrushes. The floor and furniture should be cleaned and vacuumed. Doing this minimizes the chance of recurring infestations. Apply a commercial creme rinse treatment containing permethrin or piperonyl butoxide, which are available over the counter. Leave on for the specified amount of time. Comb through hair with a nit comb to remove any lingering nits. Repeat the treatment in seven to 10 days to stop the life cycle of any remaining nits. See a doctor if infestation continues. She can prescribe a medication such as malathion or lindane. These are stronger treatments and the risks of this medication should be discussed before use.
