Maternity Grants for Pregnant Women

Pregnancy, while a time of great happiness to many women, can be a time of great financial difficulty as well. Women who are unable to work due to medical complications during their pregnancy may have difficulty finding the funds to pay for necessities such as food, shelter and health insurance. Thankfully, there are a number of programs that pregnant women may qualify for to offer assistance in ensuring that these needs are met.

  1. Women Infants and Children

    • The national Women Infants and Children Program is a federally funded supplemental nutrition program designed for pregnant women, infants and children up to the age of 5. The WIC program is a division of the United States Department of Agriculture and operates on individual state levels. In addition to assistance with purchasing nutritious foods, the WIC program issues grants to pregnant women and mothers of newborns for the purpose of purchasing a car seat. In order to receive grant funding for a new car seat, most local offices require applicants attend a 60 to 90 minute class on car safety and the importance of securing a car seat properly. Applicants must apply directly through their local WIC office.

    Growing Family Foundation

    • Growing Family, a company that specializes in newborn photos, offers grants to pregnant women and new families to help offset the expense of a new baby. Grants are typically issued in amounts ranging from $50 to $250 and can be used to purchase items such as clothing, car seats, baby furniture and other related baby care needs. In order to qualify for grant funding through the Growing Family Foundation, applicants must be pregnant and getting close to delivery or have had a new baby within the last year. Medical professionals such as doctors or nurses can also nominate a family they feel would benefit from the grant by submitting an application to the Growing Family Foundation on the family's behalf.

    HUD Housing Grants

    • The Department of Housing and Urban Development is a federally funded organization that works to provide safe, affordable housing to low-income Americans on individual state levels. Pregnant women who meet income limit qualifications may benefit from one of the many grant programs offered through HUD. The program offers grants in the form of rent vouchers to assist with rent payments, which can be especially helpful when unable to work. HUD also offers down payment assistance programs to be used towards the purchase of a home and many home addition and improvement grants that can be used to make additions or improvements to substandard homes. Interested parties will need to apply for grant funding directly through their local HUD office and be prepared to show proof of income and identification.
